PARKING IN LUCCA

Practical advice on where to park for a peaceful visit.

When someone moves in the direction of some destination, one of his first thoughts is about a place to park his car, author of the article including 🙂 No matter whether the parking is free or not, guarded or unattended, the most important thing is to park!

Lucca fortunately has multiple solutions as many are the entrance gates to the historic center that therefore increase our options: in this article we’ll take the three most used gates to enter the city, in other words Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant’Anna and Porta Santa Maria.

The first important extra parking information that must be given is the proximity of the public toilets at the first two mentioned gates; from Porta San Pietro you can go to Via Pesche, at the tourist information centre located in Piazzale Verdi entering from Porta Sant’Anna.

Let’s return to the theme that interests us most starting from Porta Santa Maria. The entrance is very convenient to climb on top of the city walls and to rent a bike since two well-stocked bike shops are in fact very close to the gate.

La Porta is located less than ten minutes walk from the big free parking in Piazzale Don Franco Baroni, where you can always find a free place. Be careful if you’re in Lucca during September because the presence of the yearly amusement park that occupies a lot of space!

Porta San Pietro is located a few steps from the railway station and just behind it there’s a long street, Via Nottolini, with its parallel streets where you can find a free stall. Among all these alleys we point out in particular Via Deodato Orlandi, also equipped with stalls reserved for people with disabilities.

If you are less inclined to walk, there are other accessible stalls near the railway station such as the one in Piazzale Ricasoli (Viale Cavour side), the one in Via Montanara close to the Post Office and the other in Viale Regina Margherita. In all these parking lots you have to pay but they are really convenient to get downtown.

We conclude with Porta Sant’Anna, perhaps the most used by tourists. Here there are many free parking spaces located a short walk away: Via delle Tagliate, Via Sercambi and its parallel streets, but during the week it’s better to arrive early as the area is definitely crowded!

As you will have realised, parking in Lucca is not a difficult or stressful challenge and just with a pinch of good will you’ll avoid to take money from your wallet!
